The Argosy University, Chicago Library blog is an online journal created to provide constantly updated, timely, and relevant information for the Argosy University Chicago community.
There are three ways to keep track of this blog:
1) Visit the blog’s site directly @ http://auchilibrary.typepad.com
2) Email subscription
If you want to read new content often, you will want to subscribe to the blog. However, if you follow multple blogs, it can add a lot of traffic to your inbox.
3) Feed Readers/Aggregators
The most flexible way to read blog content is with a feed reader, sometimes called just a reader or an aggregator. Feed readers are programs that allow you to receive the latest blog updates in one location. Most blog users utilize feed readers because they allow you to view and manage content from all your blogs in a central location.
Newer versions of both Internet Explorer and Firefox offer the option of feed subscriptions right in the browser. This might be a good option if you have a moderate number of feeds you want to track, don’t care about display options, or plan to always view your feeds from the same computer. You can also get a web-based feed reader, which allows you to log in to a website and see your feeds. This simple option allows more customization, giving you additional control over how, when, and where contents display. If you have multiple feeds to read, only check in on your blogs infrequently, or think you might increase your blog use over time, a web-based feed reader is the recommended option.
How do I subscribe to a feed?
The first step is to select a tool for subscription. As mentioned previously, newer Internet browsers include tools to help you subscribe to feeds. The simplest forms of these tools are limited in functionality and available only from your computer, and for those reasons web-based feed readers are usually a better choice. If you are interested in exploring further options for your browsers, however, look at the help information for each program.
Web-Based Feed Readers
Two of the most common feed readers are available online for free:
Google Reader
Bloglines
You can find other options by searching “feed readers” or “aggregators” in your favorite search engine. If you’ve selected an online feed reader, visit the site to subscribe. Look for a registration or sign up link to start the process.
The most straightforward way to subscribe to a blog with a feed reader is:
Step 1 - Copy the blog’s address.
Step 2 - Log in to your feed reader and click on the option to Add a feed or subscription. (If you don’t see it, look in the help information for the feed reader.)
Step 3 - Paste the address of the blog in the box provided and search.
Step 4 - Your feed reader will search the blog site for a feed.
Once you have subscribed to this blog, or other feeds, you will be able to log in to your feed reader account and see all your subscriptions. You will be able to categorize them, change the order of display, save posts for review later, etc. You will also be able to read posts within your feed reader, instead of having to visit the blog site. For more, read the help documents provided by your feed reader.
Browsers: Internet Explorer (IE)
For the latest version of Internet Explorer:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx
Look for the feed icon to appear in the top left of the browser. If it is grayed out, IE found no feed for the page. If it is orange, a feed was found. Click on the icon and select to subscribe. Once you have subscribed, you will be able to view your feeds in your Favorites Center. Click on the star icon, then select to look at Feeds. You will be able to see if there have been updates to a blog, but to see the full posts click on the titles. If you use Windows Vista, you can also view your IE feeds in your Sidebar. Consult your Windows help materials for more.
Browsers: Firefox
For the latest version of Firefox:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
Look for the feed icon to appear on the right side of the address bar. If you do not see any orange icon, Firefox found no feed for the page. If you do see the icon, click on it. Usually you will see options like Atom, RSS 1.0, and RSS 2.0. Those designate different types of feeds, but it should not matter what option you select. Click on one of those and follow the directions. Once you have subscribed, you will be able to view your feeds under Bookmarks. You will be able to see if there have been updates to a blog, but to see the full posts click on the titles. For additional customization options, consult the browser help materials.
